Australia’s best landscapes series: The Green Cauldron

Located just inland from the North Coast lifestyle capital of Byron Bay, the Rainforest Way is a series of short loop drives that showcase the lush, World Heritage-listed rainforests of Australia’s Green Cauldron National Landscape.

The centre piece of these drives is the Tweed Volcano, a dish-shaped caldera set among subtropical rainforests rich with plants, birds, animals and Aboriginal legend. The route itself follows the base of Mount Warning, offering spectacular views of the valley and rim of the caldera.

No matter which loop drive you choose, you’ll be delighted by the villages along the way offering a range of activities from health retreats to hiking, local galleries and craft markets.

Explore the spectacular hinterland of Minyon Falls and Nightcap National Park or meet the locals in alternative Nimbin. Buy fresh local produce grown in the fertile volcanic soils at roadside fruit stalls or wander through the bush tucker garden at Chillingham.

In Murwillumbah, visit the World Heritage Rainforest Information Centre where the dioramas and audio-visual presentations provide an insight into the great caldera and the creation of the sacred mountain.

The southern Gold Coast area has direct access to the Gold Coast hinterland via Currumbin Valley, which is another great way to experience Australia’s Green Cauldron.
