Hip New York luxury luxury design hotels

Boutique design hotels don’t come much better than those in New York. When you’re looking for luxury boutique hotels, style is everything. Some might name drop The Hotel or W Hotel, but here are the places we like to call home while we’re in the Big Apple. For a city that never sleeps New York sure has some seriouslystylish places to call home.

The Standard, New York

In the heart of the lively meatpacking district, this design hotel by Andre Balazs has taken the New York hotel scene by storm.

The glass and concrete colossus straddles the High Line (New York’s brand new elevated parkway - and a story in itself) with a twist of modern excess.

With 18 floors rising above New York’s fashion, art and media maelstrom you have gorgeous views over the Hudson River and Manhattan’s buzzing skyline.

What’s the edge: The Standard Grill and The Living Room measure the pulse of the creative scene day and night, so you can experience the city that never sleeps with freedom and style.

Crosby Street Hotel, New York

The Crosby Street Hotel is a glamped-up design hotel set piece smack bang in the middle of SoHo, Manhattan’s centre of chic.

The impressive 11-story construction was built from the ground up on the site of a former downtown parking lot. The interiors manage elegance and quirk in the cosiest of fashions. Colourful and eclectic, Crosby Street strikes the right balance classic and modern, elegant and comfortable.

The façade is minimalist brick, stone and glass, while warehouse windows reached up from floor to ceiling in a nod to the iconic SoHo look.

To round off the proposition there is a leafy courtyard garden, ground-floor bar and restaurant, guest-only drawing room, several private event spaces (all impeccably designed and finished with art works) and a private screening room round off the property.

Surrounded by shopping, entertainment and some of New York’s best galleries, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

What’s the edge: The top-floor suites offer uninterrupted 360-degree wide-angle views of the skyline.

Hotel Americano, New York

Carlos Couturier and Moises Micha have brought their distinctly high design sensibility from Mexico to Chelsea’s art gallery district, with Hotel Americano, an illustration of their love of modern art and Manhattan passion.

Hotel Americano mixes cool industrialism with warm Latin soul, the 56-room metal mesh-wrapped hotel featuring Mexican touches, such as the rooftop pool that transforms into a hot tub in winter.

Rooms are simplicity personified, with warm Japanese influences such as all-natural materials, wooden platform beds and white walls (think refined Ryokan on the Hudson) and all come with iPads fully loaded with a well-edited list of recommendations on the best local galleries, restaurants and shops.

What’s the edge: The sense of homeliness makes you feel part of the local scene the instant you arrive.

The Gramercy Park Hotel, New York

The Gramercy Park Hotel is a unique luxury property and a work of art in itself. Boasting one-of-a-kind paintings, sculptures and furnishings by Julian Schnabel on the inside, it’s also got its bases cover on the outside, set in one of Manhattan’s most sought after neighbourhoods and bordering New York City’s only private park.

The hotel attracts the world’s most creative minds, from international artists and literati to fashion designers and intellectuals. Find them lounging in the landscaped rooftop garden, al fresco restaurant and the strikingly designed interior spaces.

For entertaining there’s the Gramercy Terrace, a private roof club, the Rose Bar and Jade Bar, serving classic and exotic cocktails, as well as all-day bar dining.

An unconventional and individualist masterpiece, the Gramercy is where the magical happens. Appreciate original artwork from Damien Hirst, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol or ponder the recent ad campaign shot by Vera Wang in one of the guest suites, furnished with velvet curtains, leather wing chairs and carved stone mantels.

What’s the edge: Guests have exclusive access to Gramercy Park, New York City’s only private park.
