Australia’s best landscapes series: The Great South West

The Great South West of Western Australia has emerged as a ‘must-do’ destination for food, wine and nature lovers.

The Great Southern journey begins in the pretty timber town of Pemberton, a scenic four-hour drive south of Perth. Spend a few days discovering the diverse flora and fauna on an eco tour, sampling the locally produced fine wines or indulging in black truffles from the nearby town of Manjimup.

Make sure to stop at the extraordinary Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk, just north of Walpole. It’s the first walking trail of its kind in the world – at 600 metres long and 40 metres above ground, you’ll be mesmerised as you descend to the boardwalks below among ancient tingle trees, some over 400 years old.

Two hours' drive south is the town of Denmark, where the forest meets the sea. You can follow a network of short scenic drives and discover rustic vineyards, delicious local produce, great fishing spots and idyllic beaches. At Albany, a short drive along the coast from Denmark, explore the museums and heritage trails of Australia’s whaling history and take in the spectacular views over the coastline.
