The Bruny Island Long Weekend is a new three-day guided walk on one of Tasmania’s most enticing island outposts.
Located just under an hour’s drive (including a 15-minute ferry ride) south of Tasmania’s capital Hobart across the D’Entrecasteaux Channel, Bruny Island is actually made up of two islands joined by a thin spit of land. It’s one of Tasmania’s nineteen national parks.
It’s the size of Singapore, yet has only only 650 permanent residents. It’s also teaming with wonderful wildlife including the world’s only white wallabies and all 12 of Tasmania’s endemic birds.
The walk is an opportunity for total immersion into the island’s natural beauty over a couple of days in true Tasmanian style. You could be experiencing gourmet cuisine, awe-inspiring coastal walks, tasting local wines at Australia’s most southerly vineyard, and getting astonishingly close to the island’s abundant and diverse flora and fauna, from endemic birds and rare white wallabies to huge 300-metre high sea cliffs and the swell of the Great Southern Ocean.
You’ll discover how to harvest local oysters, spot nocturnal wildlife, such as the rare native eastern quolls and pademelons, visit a local cheese producer and step aboard local fisherman Rob Pennicott’s award-winning wildlife and adventure eco-cruise to spot dolphins, whales and albatross, and huge fur seal colonies.
The Bruny Island Long Weekend accommodates up to eight people per departure. Two guides accompany each group, which allows for flexibility in terms of interest and walking ability.
Accommodation is in luxurious forest camps on both nights and includes dinner prepared by the guides as you sip on Tasmanian wine around a roaring campfire.
“We are sampling the best the island has to offer over three days. The groups are small and exclusive combining experiences and education at every stop. Most of our days will be spent in wild, powerful and natural places,” said Rob Knight, founder of The Bruny Island Long Weekend.
“It’s heavy on our incredible outdoors, the wildlife and the world-class local produce including wine, cheese and oysters. But above all it’s a chance to experience the best that Tasmania has to offer, a microcosm of the main island. Visiting Bruny Island is like experiencing Australia as it was a generation ago – it’s the reason why it catches people’s imagination.”
The Bruny Island Long Weekend runs in summer – from November until April – commencing in January 2013. A special introductory price of AU$1,480 per person (approximately £950) is being offered throughout the 2013 season.
This price includes transfer from Hobart by high speed catamaran, return sea plane trip to Hobart, accommodation, all activities and visits, food and wine, the services of two qualified guides and entry into national parks.
