Milan Fashion Week: Where to stay
Among the most prestigious and glamorous events in the annual social calendar, thousands flock to Milan Fashion Week for both the summer and winter shows for the biggest showcases of next season's trends and styles. While the stylish alternatives of London, Paris and New York are equally revered by the global fashion set, Milan Fashion Week is the cream of the crop - boasting flamboyant and fun designs from some of the most celebrated Italian designers.
From partying until sunrise in the city’s coolest venues, to catwalk shows unveiling the latest haute couture creations the autumn/winter and spring/ summer editions of Milan Fashion Week are all about living life to the full. It’s been the same since the inaugural event in 1958, which first cemented this northern metropole’s reputation as the undisputed fashion capital of Italy.
Nevertheless, we all need somewhere to crash out eventually, so here’s our guide to the best places to stay….
Brera and Montenapoleone
Given these areas are renowned for their exclusive boutique stores, there’s every chance you’ll be spending a fair amount of time here anyway. As such, booking accommodation here might be a good idea, not least given how aesthetically stunning the streets are - think atmospheric avenues and quaint backstreets.
Duomo
Without question the most iconic building in the city, the Duomo (cathedral) district boasts the most dramatic views - although wartime damage has left some the addresses here a little too modern than many would like.
Navigli
Fancy something a little more urban chic? Navigli may still be a little rough around the edges, but this lively canal quarter is home to the trendiest bars, hippest nightclubs and some incredible places to eat.
Parc Sempione
The largest green space in a distinctly concrete metropolis, Parc Sempione should certainly be considered when choosing your accommodation in Milan, not least because of its proximity to the famous Castello Sforzesco Castle.
Lake Como
While Lake Como might not be in Milan at all, at just a brief 45 minute drive from the city limits the joys of escaping the hustle and bustle of it all and finding yourself in one of the country’s most stunning areas of natural beauty in under one hour shouldn’t be neglected. For a real taste of Italian elegance, enjoy a few nights in the city before heading to the lovely Lake Como for some much-needed rest and relaxation in a sprawling stately villa.
