The Mira Tsim Sha Tsui hotel is easily the best design hotel in Hong Kong.
An innovative urban retreat, the award-winning Mira is stylish and unique, located just off busy Nathan Road overlooking Kowloon Park in Central Tsim Sha Tsui, one of Hong Kong’s premier boutique-lined shopping districts.
The Mira’s smooth, slate-black façade is a statement of minimalist intent among the neon of Kowloon. Inside clear-glass windows lead to undulating purple and lilac lines where rich textures and curvaceous ink-black sculptures rule.
In the marble-floored lobby the curving white fins of the vaulted ceiling create a sphere of open space, while stalks of jade-green bamboo in the rooftop bar add soothing natural textures.
At the Mira the landscape changes from floor to floor, with the 492 rooms decked in shades of red, green, silver or purple. Modernist bubble chairs, Bose-powered soundscapes and translucent bathroom walls combine to create a resonant space, cooled down by monsoon-strength rain showers.
The polished glass panes, mirrored walls, pioneering in-room electronics, and crisp, contemporary bedrooms all add up to create an inspired inner-city sanctuary that blends experimental, minimal design with modern technology and the best in age-old Asian hospitality.
The interior architect behind The Mira, Miami-based Charles Allem, said he was inspired by Hong Hong’s expansive skyline, natural environment and historical architecture when designing The Mira’s interiors.
The Mira Hong Kong may be a world away from LA, but signs of Hollywood-style extravagance are everywhere. Together Colin Gowie and Allem have injected their brand of American flair into what was once a traditional Hong Kong icon.
As far as Hong Kong design hotels go, they don’t come much better than this.
